The first edition of this book was published in 1991, but the more recent developments in the field of synthetic stones and in instruments for their determination make this second edition particularly timely. As before, the work is tailored to enable it to be used as a text to assist students to prepare for both the Preliminary and the Diploma examinations of the Gemmological Association, and appropriate additions and amendments have been made to take account of the changes in the syllabi.
