This set of thematic papers arose from a symposium on “Frontiers in Quartz Research: The genesis, crystal chemistry and economic importance of igneous, metamorphic and hydrothermal SiO2-polymorphs” held at the 33rd International Geological Congress (IGC) during August 2008 in Oslo, Norway. The eleven papers in the set reflect the progress made during the last 15 years or so in the application of advanced characterization methods to study the petrogenesis, oxygen-isotope and trace-element geochemistry, physical properties and defect microstructures of quartz and chalcedony.
