Abstract

Introduces three new formations which, together with the Esna shales (Landenian), comprise the Libya group of lower Tertiary rocks in Egypt--the Thebes limestone, characterized by an open-sea facies, and the Farafra limestone, characterized by a reef facies, both Ypresian; and the Lutetian Minia limestone (reef). Foraminifers from the Thebes formation and underlying Esna shales are described. Globorotalia thebaica n.sp. is included among the forms from the Thebes formation.
