At the International Nannoplankton Association meeting (INA 9) in Parma, it was recognized that much research is currently in progress on extant coccolithophores including studies of plankton, sediment trap and core-top samples. Participants felt that a specialist workshop would be useful to facilitate this research, increase collaboration between the different workers, share research results, improve training, discuss methods and research priorities and identify targets for collaborative research. The University of Athens offered to host the workshop, as their team had recently begun studies of coccolithophores in the Aegean Sea area.
