Examines some of the hypotheses involved when planktonic foraminifera are used for intercontinental correlation of Tertiary marine deposits. The order of reliability when used for such correlation is as follows: (1) initial appearances of taxa in an evolutionary lineage, (2) abrupt (or gradual) extinction, (3) initial appearances of cryptogenes and acmes of abundance, and (4) coiling ratio changes.
