The stratigraphic importance of many mid-Tertiary species of the foraminiferal genera Siphogenerina and Uvigerina has been obscured by stratigraphic complexities, nomenclatorial confusion such as synonyms and misidentifications, misunderstandings concerning phylogenetic relationships, and a paucity of reliable stratigraphic data. Some important species intervals are discussed and plotted on a correlation diagram and range chart for eastern Venezuela, California, and the Gulf Coast region. Although the treatment here is basically biostratigraphic, some taxonomic difficulties are discussed for future consideration. Two new species of Uvigerina are described.
