Excellent polished thin-sections are routinely made at the Falconbridge laboratory. The sliced and ground specimens are polished on 10-15 mu and then 6-8 mu diamond-impregnated plastic laps at 75-100 rpm before mounting on the glass slide. The sawed and ground section is then polished from 0.035 mm to 0.030 mm on the 6-8 mu lap and placed for 1/2-4 hours on the vibratory polisher with first 0.3 mu and then 0.05 mu alumina in water-slurry.
