In our recent paper concerning porosity and permeability of deeply buried reservoirs of the Cusiana Field, Colombia, South America (Warren and Pulham 2001) we documented that quartz cement in pure quartz sandstones has reduced porosity to 8.5% (average), yet permeabilities are still high; 100s to 1000s mD. We also described an empirical relationship between the presence of detrital phosphate in the quartzose sandstones and unusually high porosity preservation. We consider these properties of the Cusiana reservoir sandstones of significance not just to the Llanos foothills of eastern Colombia but also to the prediction of porosity or permeability wherever...
