JSR has a long history of publishing research methods papers. It is a tradition we intend to continue, but we have noted some troubling trends with respect to such papers and will be implementing some editorial changes in response.

Using the science citation index, we found that over 50% of all methods papers published between 1995 and 1998 were never cited, and only 10% had numerous citations indicative of a truly useful and widely utilized new method. We would obviously prefer to publish more of the latter and fewer of the former. Discriminating between these two end-members is not always...
