Spence and Tucker (1999) explain that systems tracts described using standard microfacies (e.g., Wilson 1975; Flügel 1982) fail to take into account gradual changes in the water depths occurring through changes in relative sea level. They cite Steinhauff and Walker (1995) as an example illustrating the shortcomings of using microfacies to correlate a carbonate succession.
