On the average, each paper published in the Journal is cited twice a year, as recorded by Science Citations Index . Papers selected as "Outstanding" or "Best" papers are generally cited more frequently, though a few have been rarely cited. About a third of the papers are the most-cited paper by the author. Based on an analysis of references listed in journal papers, the "half life" of a paper in sedimentology is about six years. These characteristics appear to be typical of a young, expanding scientific discipline.
