Abstract

Dry cellulose peels made on etched and stained surfaces of carbonate sediments and rocks permit identification of the common carbonate minerals and show greater textural detail than thin sections. By using a series of several peels from a rock surface stained with Alizarin Red-S, potassium ferricyanide, Feigl's solution and Alizarin cyanine green, calcite, ferroan calcite, high magnesium calcite, aragonite, dolomite, and ferroan dolomite can be identified. Procedures and etching and staining times are given.
