Steplike protuberances that R. E. Riecker suggested could be used to determine relative fault motion (J. Sediment. Petrology, Vol. 35, p. 746-748, 1965) are discussed on the basis of observations on well-preserved slickensided fault planes at localities in northern Australia. Several problems in interpretation relating especially to secondary faulting are noted.
