Abstract

Characteristic markings on detrital quartz grain surfaces which result from impact, chemical solution, and crystal overgrowth can be photographed for study in magnifications ranging from 300X to 1100X. A standard monocular petrographic microscope is used together with pinhole diaphragms, a bellows type photo enlarger-camera and other relatively inexpensive accessories. An indexed collection of such high quality photomicrographs of magnified grain surface textures may aid in the interpretation of environments of deposition of quartz-bearing sediment.
