Abstract

The beds, lower Purbeck in age, formed in an evaporitic environment, the dominant sediment a carbonate mud now found as pellets in a calcite cement or as homogeneous calcite mudstone. The content of shell material is variable, but algae appear to have had a considerable influence on sedimentation throughout the depositional period. Details of a petrographic examination of these beds are presented.
