Abstract

"Rapid surface water evaporation in the Persian Gulf induces precipitation of calcium carbonate, though the process is complicated by biological interference. At the same time eolian sand and dust are deposited in the gulf and mixed sediments result. In shallow water and on the beaches oolitization and other types of sand modification take place including the formation of aragonitic sheet limestones. The mineralogical properties of aragonite may be the principal factor controlling ooelitization."
