Abstract

This paper discusses changes which occur in sediments between deposition and final lithification, under temperatures and pressures associated with near-surface conditions in the ' lithosphere. Among such changes are compaction, cementation, recrystallization, replacement, differential solution, and the development of authigenic minerals. The result of these changes is discussed in terms of sediment properties--composition, texture, and structure--with emphasis on textural changes. Problems of reconstructing original conditions of sedimentation in the light of these changes are also pointed out.
