Additional phyllocarid material from upper Plattenkalk beds of the Devonian Bergisch Gladbach syncline includes a complete specimen, in which the abdomen and valve are connected, belonging to the genus Montecaris which was recently described on the basis of an isolated carapace and telson from the same locality. The state of preservation of the new material, here described as Montecaris lehmanni n.sp., permits a better comparison with related fossil and Recent forms than was possible with the genotype (M. strunensis). The sculpture of the dorsal shield, abdominal development, and other features suggest closer relationships with the Apodidae than with living Nebaliacea, and lead to the designation of Montecaris and allied phyllocarids as branchiopods similar to the Notostraca.
