O'Dogherty (1994) erected the genus Pogonias for a distinctive group of Cretaceous radiolarians characterized by a tetrahedral thoracic segment drawn out distally into divergent appendages and considered, from a stratigraphic point of view, as a useful marker for the Albian-Turonian interval.
