On 18 August 2004, the paleontology community lost a major figure with the passing of Helen Tappan Loeblich. Born on 12 October 1917, in Norman, Oklahoma, Helen Tappan went on to become an international leader in the field of micropaleontology. She earned her B.S. degree in 1937 at the University of Oklahoma, Phi Beta Kappa, and received the Sigma Gamma Epsilon Scholarship Award for Outstanding Senior in Geology.
