Abstract

Ichthycanthus platypus, an enigmatic amphibian from the Middle Pennsylvanian of Linton, Ohio, proves on preparation of the holotype to have been based on a large, incomplete postcranial skeleton of the dissorophoid amphibian Amphibamus lyelli (Wyman, 1858). The latter name has priority. As the holotype of the type species is lost, the genus Ichthycanthus and its type species I. ohiensis are nomina dubia. The lightly built body of the adult Amphibamus was highly adapted to a terrestrial mode of life.--Modified journal abstract.
