Abstract

Eocopea oculata n. gen., n. sp. (Isopoda:Sphaeromatidae) is reported from the upper Miocene of Kern County, California. Comparison with extant species suggests an affinity with the subfamily Ancininae, but the definitive characters needed to assign Eocopea to an extant subfamily are not preserved. Morphologically this species appears to be closest to the extant species Bathycopea daltonae. The paleoenvironment appears to have been a neritic-zone ophiuroid bed. Similarities between the habitat of B. daltonae and the proposed paleoenvironment are discussed.--Modified journal abstract.
