Abstract

Lyssakid, euplectellid sponges are reported for the first time from the Lower Triassic of North America. The new sponge genus and species, Cypellospongia fimbriartis, is figured and described. The large sponge is goblet shaped with relatively thick walls around a deep, simple spongocoel and with a tubular to somewhat anastomosing stalk. The three localities in the Wasatch Mountains of central Utah and one in the southern Butte Mountains of central Nevada are all from the Lower Triassic Thaynes Formation of Scythian age.--Modified journal abstract.
