Abstract

Spores representing the autochthonous coal-swamp flora and wind- or water-borne types probably from gymnospermous or allied plants are identified in a suite of samples from the coal member of the Copacabana formation. Five new species are described. Associated fusulinid limestones confirm a Sakmarian-Artinskian (lower Permian) age for the formation. This is the first record of Permian microspores from South America.
