Abstract

Sponges are from one outcrop of Gunsight Limestone Member, Graham Formation (Pennsylvanian) in Grosvenor Quadrangle, Brown County, Texas. The member is divided into two carbonate units separated by thin shale unit with sponges. Lower unit is foraminiferal-brachiopodal biomicrite with pseudozaphrentoid corals; upper is algal-foraminiferal biomicrite. All three were deposited in shallow water. A new order of calcisponges, Wewokellida, is proposed for Wewokella, whose sole species is W. solida Girty; other species placed in synonymy. A gerontic growth form is described.
