Abstract

A new genus of Middle Ordovician sponge (Hyalospongia, Leptomitidae), Offella, and its type species, Offella spondeum, are established from an analysis of 126 individuals from the lowermost biofacies of the Lenoir Limestone in Cahaba Valley, Ala. Reconstnstruction of the paleoecology of this area indicates a sublittoral environment. The Lenoir Limestone is amended to include the Odenville Limestone as its lowermost biofacies.--V.M.J
