Abstract

Gardner divided Pecten poulsoni into 2 species, Pecten (Pecten) sp. cf. P. (P.) poulsoni Morton and Pecten (Pecten) byramensis Gardner. The writer examined Gardner's criteria and studied statistically other morphologic features of the shell. From these studies it is concluded that Pecten poulsoni morton and byramensis Gardner are synonymous and that neither subspecific nor varietal names should be applied to this single species of Pecten. Hence, Vicksburgian [Oligocene] Pectinidae have no formational stratigraphic significance within the Vicksburg group [Gulf Coastal Plain].
