The echinoid genus Megapetalus Clark (1929), based on an internal mold from the upper Miocene of the Ventura basin, California, is redefined as a result of the study of additional, better preserved material referable to the type species. Megapetalus is referred to the spatangoid family Palaeopneustidae, rather than the Loveniidae as proposed by Clark and Mortensen. Palaeopneustes holmani Grant and Hertlein (1938) from the Repetto Formation [Pliocene] of the Los Angeles basin is probably referable to Megapetalus.
