Abstract

Hyolithes has been variously classified by different authors, most placing it somewhere within the Mollusca, Coniconchia Liashenko, 1957, was proposed as a class containing 2 super orders, Hyolithoidea and Tentaculoidea; the class was questionably referred to the Mollusca. There seems to be no reason to question placement of Coniconchia as mollusks and there is no theoretical objection to basing a class or any other major category on fossils rather than living specimens. It is suggested that each of the superorders eventually should be raised to class rank.
