Abstract

Study of bottom samples collected mainly from depths of 20 to 200 meters showed that foraminiferal number, number of species, and percentage of planktonic forms increased with depth. Four dominant faunas were established--those of the inner, central, and outer shelf and the upper bathyal fauna beyond the break in slope. Replacement of test material by glauconite has occurred with many benthonic and some planktonic foraminifers;the highest percentages (over 50 percent) of replaced specimens were found in Hainan strait.
