Abstract

A new species of Tertiary prairie dog Cynomys spispiza, is represented by a partial lower jaw that was found on the surface of a Valentine sand. The species is compared with Cynomys ludovicianus and C. leucurus to which the fossil is related. The temporal range of the genus is extended to the early Pliocene or late Miocene. No evidence is available to determine the ancestry of Cynomys.
