Abstract

The apparent second carina near the anterior margin of the valve in the original illustration of Leaia curta, an upper Paleozoic phyllopod described from a Brazilian locality in 1929, has been shown to represent a true hinge line which slightly overlaps a portion of another specimen. Bileaia, erected by Kobayashi, was based on a misinterpretation of the illustration and is therefore a nomen nudum.
