H. D. Maher Jr, S. Bergh & Alvar Braathen write: Manby & Lyberis (2000) argue for a Cretaceous–Palaeocene age and a convergent setting for both the fold structures of the Wandel Sea Basin and for the West Spitsbergen fold–thrust belt as an alternative to models of decoupling during Palaeocene–Eocene transpressive motions between Greenland and the Barents Shelf. In this context, we discuss evidence on the timing and kinematics of the West Spitsbergen fold–thrust belt, and constraints on the timing of deformation in the Wandel Sea Basin.
