The Journal of the Geological Society has changed beyond all recognition since I first became aware of its existence over a quarter of a century ago. From a quarterly periodical with a distinctly UK and Commonwealth focus, it has been transformed into a competitive international journal, publishing papers of global significance by leading authors of diverse nationality. This change has been due in large part to the sustained efforts of my two immediate predecessors (Mike Le Bas and Ian Fairchild) and their editorial boards, and it is to these editors that I extend my gratitude in passing on the Journal...
