Abstract

Suites of samples from the Townsend Tuff Bed possess widely varying clay mineralogies, which may be divided into 5 major assemblages showing a general increase in diagenetic grade (from smectite/illite/kaolinite to chlorite/illite) to the W. This trend appears to be related to depth of burial. fold style and proximity to basement. Illite crystallinity closely parallels cleavage development.
