The phenomenon of autocorrelation of major physical, chemical and biological processes, which underlies the recognition of geological rhythms and cycles in the outer Earth, deserves further study.Study of the mechanisms which link driving changes with responding changes will be particularly important. 3 Main drives are identified: (1) sea-level change, (2) calcium sulphate deposition, and (3) carbon dioxide injection. All other changes are thought to be direct or indirect responses. Brief consideration is given to the significance of stable carbon isotopes, oceanic sedimentation and magnetic reversal/sea-level variations in elucidating the operation of autocorrelation mechanisms in the past.
