The cycles postulated by Fischer (1979) are considered in the light of the Mesozoic stratigraphical and palaeontological record. It is suggested that the most important events were: (i) the late Permian regression; (ii) the late mid-Triassic transgression; (iii) the late late-Transgression; (iv) the late early Jurassic transgression; (v) the late mid-Jurassic transgression; (vi) the end-Jurassicre gression; (vii) the late early Cretaceous transgression; (viii) the end-Cretaceous regression. These are related to episodicity in ocean-floor spreading, climatic changes and major happenings in the history of the shallow marine benthos.
