The development of ortho-enstatite from olivine has been observed in sheared peridotites and in basalt xenoliths, presumably due to the introduction of a silica–rich fluid phase into the rocks under crustal conditions; deformation appears to enhance the reaction. Care must be taken when using defect structures in orthopyroxene to determine mantle deformation conditions and mechanisms as not all grains are of mantle origin.
