Abstract

This review links the main points in the set of papers in vol. 134, part 2 dealing with reasearch related to the crust-mantle boundary. Whilst it is possible to characterize the properties of the boundary and the rocks above and below it in Mesozoic-Recent oceanic and continental areas (and their modifications during the plate tectonic scheme of events), we are also able to study lower crustal and upper mantle rocks of Precambrian and Palaeozoic age. The history of the boundary is directly related to continental evolution throughout geological time.
