Abstract

Professor Richard St. J Lambert writes: The new structural analysis of the Kinlochleven district by Treagus (1974) provides a very welcome simplification of the structure to the W of Kinlochleven, even though it creates problems of identification of the schists in the district near the R. Spean. During field work for a project on the geochemistry of the Leven and Monadhliath schists (Lambert & Holland in preparation) observations were made on the sequence in the R. Leven E of Kinlochleven which imply conclusions different from those of Treagus (1974 fig. 4, P. 539–41).

At locality 5, fig. 4 (NN 2025 6100) the c.25 m sequence was examined in detail on the N side of the river to the W of the 5 m dyke at the foot of the fall. It consists of thinly striped and banded alternations of semipelite and psammite, the latter commonly being very micaceous. Feldspathic quartzite to one edge of the sequence (W) grades into Eilde Quartzite. This sequence appears to be part of the “gradation” of Treagus (p. 539, 2 (A)) W of the 5 m slumped horizon in the Moine. Most of the layers are to a certain extent lensoidal and discontinuous, and the section appears to be a transition by alternation of rock-type, either of sedimentary or of later tectonic origin, and not a true gradation. A similar alternating sequence is found at NN 226606, and also possibly in the poorly exposed ground between the two Dubh lochans.
