The success of micropaleontology, and the employment of most of its practitioners (namely, paleontologists and biostratigraphers), has always been based on its utility (Martin, 1995). Indeed, the fortunes of all of paleontology throughout much of the 20th century were tied to the utility of micropaleontology in petroleum exploration (Martin, 1991; Gastaldo and others, 1997).
