Les Paul Beard received his PhD in geophysics from the University of Utah, an MS in geophysics from Texas A&M University, and a BS in mathematics and physics from East Texas State University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in environmental geophysics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1993–1996. He worked as a specialist in airborne geophysical surveys at the Geological Survey of Norway from 1996–2001. In 2001, he returned to Oak Ridge National Lab to help develop airborne geophysical systems for applications to unexploded ordnance detection.
