How many of you remember Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG), Indiana? That is where it, more or less, all began with unexploded ordnance (UXO) detection and discrimination. In the early 1990's, the U.S. Army Environmental Center (AEC), Aberdeen, Maryland, was tasked by Congress to conduct a program to demonstrate and evaluate systems and technologies to detect, identify and remediate buried UXO. AEC selected JPG as a test site and assigned the Naval Explosives Ordnance Technology Division, Indian Head, Maryland, as technical lead in the program.
