Les P. Beard received a Ph.D. (1993) in geophysics from the University of Utah, an M.S. in geophysics from Texas A&M, and a B.S. in physics and mathematics from East Texas State University. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in environmental geophysics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1993–1996. He joined the Geological Survey of Norway in 1996 and worked there until 2001, primarily involved with airborne geophysical surveys. In 2001, he returned to Oak Ridge National Lab to research airborne geophysical applications to unexploded ordnance.
