Abstract

New sedimentologic, petrographic, biostratigraphic and structural data have been collected from two sections of the Oligocene-Miocene terrigenous successions of the Internal "Dorsale Calcaire", in the Tetouan and Jebha areas (Rifian Chain, Morocco). The results obtained show (i) abundance of coarse-grained lithofacies (disorganized and organized clast-supported carbonate breccias and conglomerates), locally interbedded with medium- to fine-grained lithofacies, (ii) sedimentary supply mainly derived from the Alpine shallow-water carbonate cover of the Internal Domains and subordinately, from their very slightly metamorphic basement, (iii) an age not older than Chattian up to Late Aquitanian and (iv) the dominance of a mainly compressive syn-sedimentary tectonic activity. These data are here interpreted as results of thrusting and uplift processes which affected the Internal Domain of the Rifian Chain and induced rejuvenation of the relief of the folded thrust belt with formation of rugged topography. Probable unroofing mechanisms with high erosion rates of these areas provided a conspicuous terrigenous supply for the adjoining piggy-back basins.
