A sedimentological study has been conducted on quartz grains coming from the lower member of the Punta Serpeddi Formation (Brurcu Spollittu Member), outcropping in the Paleozoic basement of southeastern Sardinia (Sarrabus) and made up of microdetritic thick layers of quartzarenites. SEM and EDS analysis documented the chemical-physical weathering, in a fluvial and aeolian context, which affected the observed sediment before its deposition in a marine platform, and the effects of diagenesis after its burial; in detail, it has been pointed out an hydrothermal activity, concurrent with the diagenesis, which could have supported the growth of Illite at Caolinite's expense in a periglacial paleoenvironment context.
