Abstract

A preliminary 2-D crustal modelling has been realized by a joint interpretation of kinematic seismic data and Bouguer anomalies relative to the M25, M26, M28, M39 profiles, carried out in Sicily by the wide-angle seismic recording technique. It was generally possible to constrain the patterns relative to the shallowest structures with a high degree of accuracy, using results of previous seismic surveys and further geologic information. Fewer and less accurate constraints resulting from previous geophysical studies could, on the other hand, be introduced on deeper structures. Processing techniques optimized on purpose allowed a correlation of the main seismic phases on sections previously characterized by a low signal to noise ratio. After joining the investigated profiles with a three-dimensional model relative to the Sicilian crust, obtained from a synthesis of all geophysical data available in the area (Quarta et alii, 1998), some assumptions could be made about the possible relations between the crustal structures of the basins studied and Sicily.
