Use of physiographically based runoff in water resources evaluation using River Biferno high watershed an example (Molise, Italy). An hydrogeological research was conducted on the River Biferno high watershed (Molise, Italy) with the principal aim of verifying the validity of physiographically based runoff evaluation, proceeding through the estimate of its potential total water resources and the subdivision between surface water and groundwater. This research, which was mostly based on calculations of water balance, confirms that the above-mentioned runoff corresponds to the natural runoff with the exclusion of groundwater contributions coming from adjoining watersheds ("internal runoff"): from this derives a further advantage of the methodology in water resource evaluation, particularly for hydrogeologically complex and/or lacking of information areas. The study also permitted to estimate the groundwater flows towards the Biferno watershed (about 75.6-106 m <sup>3</sup> /year), which are approximately twice as regards those going out from the same (about 39.4 106 m <sup>3</sup> /year).
