Abstract

Stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Rio di Nava Limestones (Bathonian) are here investigated. The Formation belongs to the Ligurian Brianconnais domain outcropping in the high Tanaro and Corsaglia valleys (Cuneo province, NW Italy). All the better out-cropping sequences have been carefully examined and divided by the distinctive tectonic elements inside the Ormea tectonic unit, and five different lithofacies have been described. These are made up by carbonates, microbreccias and calcarenites; on the whole they concur to identify four major "parasequence" (sensu Van Wagoner et alii, 1988). These latter belong to shallowing-upward sequences of shallow water environments with different energy (restricted and open lagoons, patch reefs, bars, shoals and bank margins, homoclinal ramps) resting on different substrates. Comparisons with the better known coeval successions of the Swiss Mediane Prealps and the French "classic" Brianconnais ("Couches a Mytilus" of the French Authors) have been carried out; they show similarity both on facies distribution and chronology.
