Abstract

Carrying on the researches about geology and slope stability of Garfagnana and Middle Serchio Valley, Tuscany (the related results was partially published on this review in 1986 and 1987), the Authors present the studies about four more cartographic elements, "Sillano", "Corfino", "Fosciandora" and "Coreglia". As a complement of the geologic map, they discuss in detail the problematics regarding the stratigraphy of the tectonic complexes outcropping in the Serchio Valley, with particular reference to the Tuscan Series. About the tectonic depression of the valley, within which we find the lacustrine and fluvial-lacustrine pliopleistocenic series of Barga and Castelnuovo, the Authors underline the importance of some transverse tectonic dislocations, which would have locally acted as "barrages", documentable at least since Lower Villafranchian. Between Borgo a Mozzano and Valdottavo, they point out some aspects, showing the prosecution of a tectonic activity after the Villafranchian age too. Describing the geomorphologic lineaments of Middle and High Serchio Valley, it is shown that they are strongly conditioned not only by lithologic but also structural factors. Finally, after the examination of slope movements typology and distribution, related to the lithology of the formations and the description of the largest landslides, the Authors study M. Castri area, east of Corfino, where a deep-seated gravitational slope deformation has been identified and set against the background of the local morphostructural context.
